This Grammy-winning banjo virtuoso melds bluegrass and folk in a modern improvisational style. Desiring to return the banjo to Africa to explore its roots, Béla Fleck enlisted talented African musicians to perform with him in a concert that spans cultures and continents. The acclaimed film Throw Down Your Heart captured the powerful collaboration of these talented artists and inspired this landmark tour.
Throw Down Your Heart, the third volume in Fleck’s celebrated Tales From the Acoustic Planet series, is his most ambitious project to date. In on-location collaborations with musicians from Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, South Africa and Madagascar, Béla Fleck explores the African origins of the banjo. The modern banjo was developed by African slaves in the United States, who modeled it on ancient gourd banjos devised in Africa.
Béla Fleck’s Grammy Award background reflects his appeal and musical versatility – he has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history. Since 1998, Fleck has been nominated for Grammys 27 times and has won 11 of these prestigious music awards.
